2010 USA Swimming, Southern Zone
Select Camp Reflections
My experience
at the Zone Select Camp was awesome! From meeting people in
North and South Carolina all the way to Florida! We did
USA cheers and racing that really made us feel at home. The
coaches based everything on USA and told us to "forget" our home
team and focus on what team USA is all about. It was a very
eye-opening experience. All the kids there were extremely
fast and it made training a lot tougher. It made you go hard every
time you got in the pool no matter what your excuse was that day.
We had tons of long meetings before both practices everyday,
and although they were kind of lengthy, I still think I got a lot
out of them. We did some fun stuff like going to a AAA
baseball game and even seeing who could throw the ball the fastest.
We hung out with friends, played ultimate frisbee, hide n'
go-seek, and even capture the flag. It was only a 4 day trip,
but it defiantly changed how I view other swimmers in the country.
It opened my eyes to see how and what you have to do to
make other camps throughout the USA. It was defiantly a life
changing experience for me!
~Ryan Massey,
Junior National Qualifier
I was chosen to travel up to Louisville Kentucky for the Southern
Zone Select Camp this year. It was a great learning
experience for me personally. I was blessed to have great
friends from the Gulf region and also a great coach from PACK at
the camp with me. My favorite part about the camp was that I
got to practice with the best of the best in the southern zone.
I got to meet swimmers from El Paso, Texas to Charlotte,
North Caroline. I was able to practice and race with them,
and saw how they handled staying positive during a painful
practice. I was also able to see how all these swimmers were
just as tired as I was and never showed it...never
complained...they just did what they had to do. At the camp I
found a new mind set for my workouts. When I'm broken down
and tired, I now have the mental capacity to prevent a set from
beating me down. We started and ended the main set with our
best effort day after day after day. I believe that mind set
will take any swimmer to the next level of success. There was
also a great team environment at practice, and back at the dorm
when we had free time to hangout. The last day we were told
to split up into two teams (USA. Men and USA. Women), and we had to
do a test set. As one heat was swimming, the people not
swimming were not just sitting around watching...they were yelling
at the end of pool. Each group was on the sides screaming and
cheering for their team. When I got up on the block, and saw
all of my teammates cheering for me, it really made such a
big difference...a lesson we can all learn for practice and
meets!
~Sam Bryant,
Junior Nationals Qualifier
What a tremendous experience! From discussions with other
coaches across the country, to working with some of USA Swimming's
best, I really enjoyed my time in Kentucky. I was so proud to
watch our PACK athletes represent our club and LSC with such a high
level of respect and responsibility. While running workouts
and talking with other coaches, it was nice to know that our
philosophy of technique, training, and progression is at the very
forefront of USA Swimming. My main message that I took to the
camp, and hopefully sent home with all of the athletes, was all
about respect. And at the end of the camp, almost all of the
swimmers were walking up to each coach...shaking their hand...and
thanking them for practice. Amazing! I've come back
with contacts, ideas, and information...but mostly, I've come back
proud of what we're doing right here at Premier Aquatics.
Here's to our future!
